This week we discussed ‘victory’ in our series on ‘Love on the Move’. Our key statement in this series states that “love moves as divine mercy intersects with the opportunity of human need, bringing redemptive victory through encounters with Jesus and His Kingdom”.

We began by reading the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19, where Jesus’ words and actions released heaven’s victory into Zacchaeus life and the life of his city. As exciting and important as that encounter with Jesus was, it got me wondering… what was life like for Zacchaeus some time later? How difficult was it for him to continue to live in victory when “his friends had became his enemies, and his enemies had become his friends (perhaps), and now nobody trusted him?” What, in fact, did living in victory look like for Zacchaeus several weeks later, and additionally, what does the Bible have to say about living victoriously?

In Romans 8 Paul describes us as “more than conquerors”, a phrase that speaks of victorious living. He says that the Spirit helps us in our weakness; and that trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, or any form of danger cannot separate us from the love of Christ. In fact, God works in all things for the good of those who love him (including those aforementioned troubles)! We are called to not only “conquer” such adversities; they even work toward our good (that Christ be formed in us).

In Romans 12 Paul goes on to describe this overcoming/conquering life… Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Be devoted to one another in love; honour one another above yourselves; be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer; share with the Lord's people who are in need; practice hospitality. This is the victorious Christian life - a life where we “conquer” (with the Spirit’s help) adversities such as selfishness, pride and arrogance. All this in the midst of various trials and troubles. This is the calling that Zacchaeus was to live in response to, as are we. Real victory is conquering our old self by putting on the new.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. Recall a moment in your life when you experienced a moment of God’s victory in your life. Take a moment to give thanks to God for all he did at that time.

2. Take some time to reflect on how you have previously understood and articulated the victorious Christian life. What does “living victoriously” mean to you? Then, if you have the opportunity, read Romans 8 followed by Romans 12 to get a sense of what Paul is saying about when he says that we are “more than conquerors”.

3. Think of some examples from this past week where it was a challenge to live victoriously. Spend some time reflecting on how you can partner with the Spirit to “overcome evil with good”.

This interaction between Jesus and the Samaritan woman shows us that our calling is found in everyday opportunities. Simple opportunities that have the potential for profound impact. By following Jesus' example we too can learn to lean into these divine opportunities.

First, we must hold the conviction that wherever we are God is up to something, either in you or in someone else. Our job is to have faith, pay attention and be ready to obey.

Second, opportunities are not without obstacles. Jesus is willing to go to extraordinary lengths and cross all kinds of barriers to minister to those in need.

At the end of this interaction, Jesus quotes a proverb, ""Don't you have a saying, 'It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest"". The point of citing the proverb is to contrast it with what is happening now. Jesus has come, something is happening in our world and to our world, the waiting time is over, the time of harvest has arrived!

The time of "opportunity" is now here.

That "something" that is happening is resurrection. Resurrection isn't just contained to one moment in time, it continues to happen to our world and to your life. Therefore, we can be confident that we all have opportunities in our day where God wants to move in and through us.

Resurrection life is at work to re-order everything around a new centre. Giving birth to new priorities, a new pace, a new posture, and new passions. It is this re-ordering that readies us for Kingdom opportunities.

Paul describes it like this; ""To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me"" (Colossians 1:29). I wonder how much of world gets changed when this is how we pursue the opportunities in our life. If we would strenuously contend in prayer. Strenuously contend in practice. Strenuously contend in allowing love to be on the move.

2. Is my pace, priorities, posture and passion centred around Jesus?

3. Read 2 Corinthians 5:14-15. What does it look like for you to live compelled by love? What change would you expect to see in your life and in the lives of those around vou?

The key to understanding this parable is the interaction between Jesus and the religious teacher. When the religious leader asks “Who is my neighbour?”, he is asking, Jesus, where can I draw the line? The good Samaritan is a story that tests our understanding of love. It confronts and unmasks any false limits we have put on love that would restrict our ability to release love and mercy into our world. Mercy is love moving in response to human need in an unexpected and undeserved way.

Our task as followers of Jesus is to ruthlessly attend to any structures in our heart or mind that would prevent us from following Jesus’ command to “go and do likewise”, to go and show mercy to those in need. Psychologist James Hollis says every day when a man or woman wakes up two shadows are standing over their bed, fear and apathy. These two shadows limit mercy, the flow of love in our life. In our world fear often looks like suspicion or mistrust and has the power to shape the way we see others, and how we react to moments of injustice. Fear, turns our hearts inwards and limits our ability to extend mercy but love moves through a heart that has learnt to turn outward.

Spiritual apathy isn’t inaction, it is this idea of being numb to the meaningful, but “alive” to the trivial. The word the early church fathers used to describe this was “acedia”, and it is spiritual resistance to spiritual progress. Acedia seeks to distract you from those things that will bring us life, stealing your joy, and reducing your faith to a passionless grind. How do we confront the limits put on our love and mercy by fear and apathy? The gospel is our cure. The parable of the good Samaritan humbles us with the mercy God requires so we can receive the mercy God offers. The Gospel will re-posture our hearts from facing inward to outward. The gospel will awaken our hearts with a fiery and holy zeal.

1. To what degree has fear limited our ability to love? To what degree is fear shaping the way we see others?

1. Where does apathy show up most in my life? How does it hinder me from living a full, kingdom of God kind of life? How does apathy limit love from moving in and through my life?

He drew on the analogy of smelling freshly baked garlic bread to illustrate how God is stirring up a hunger for His presence in the church today. We're encouraged to examine our hearts and respond to this invitation for renewal. The message emphasises that true impact comes from intimacy with God, not just good deeds. As we reflect on our own faith journey, we're invited to rekindle that first love, restructure our lives around Jesus, and return to a place of awe and wonder in our relationship with Him.

Read Ephesians 6.

In chapter 6, Paul concludes with a key set of scriptures about how we are to stand firm in this new kingdom reality made available through Christ. He knew that for us to live as new creation people in unity with each other, we would need both the empowering of the Spirit to do so, and to be made aware of the enemy that would be working against us. That while this enemy would be working to prevent what the gospel is accomplishing through us, we are equipped with powerful armour in the Spirit to both fight off the enemy’s schemes, and to stand firm in our faith.

Firstly, Paul makes clear WHO our enemy is. It’s not “flesh and blood”, it’s the “spiritual forces of evil”. We are not fighting people, we are fighting the enemy named in scripture and by Jesus as Satan and his demons, and as Jesus explains in John 8:44, “he is a liar and the father of lies”. These scriptures reveal to us WHAT we as followers of Jesus are fighting. Lies!

\In the context of Ephesians, our enemy is working to destroy the work of the gospel in the people in Ephesus, as well as us today. He will use his lies to seek to disconnect us from God and one another, and cause us to question and walk away from who we are in Christ. It is here that Paul outlines the armour that we as believers have been given in Christ to withstand his schemes. The armour Paul lists, is the practical application of “putting on” the new self.

Putting on the armour of God, is taking what is true of you as proclaimed in the gospel. Putting this truth into your heart - through the power of the spirit. Through the word and through prayer until they become new habits of the heart - new reflexes, new dispositions of the soul. This truth as it becomes a part of every fibre of our being, will have us both able to recognise our enemies tactics, and ready to fight off and stand firm in the truth of the gospel of Christ!

Read Ephesians 5.

Here’s the big 10,000-metre-high snapshot of what Paul is saying in the first half of Ephesians chapter 5. We were made for love, to give love and receive love What kind of love? Christ-like, cross-shaped, sacrificial love. Therefore, we are to disentangle ourselves from anything that violates this love. Things like; unwholesome talk, sexual immorality, and greed, which is the relentless drive to need more. We are to disengage from acts that destroy community and engage in acts that build community. Paul wants us to come to the conclusion that this kind of life is impossible without being filled, and continually filled with the Spirit. One commentator phrases it this way, “let the Holy Spirit fill you”. It's about surrender, letting the Spirit permeate into every part of your life. Paul doesn’t change the subject in chapter 5 but he does set aside the theology to get practical.

Christ’s death and resurrection changed everything and this means something. It means something to our relationships with each other, to our marriages, our households and how we relate in the workplace. Paul takes what we have learnt so far in chapters 1 through 4 about salvation, the gospel, the love of Christ and being spirit-filled; now he will map it out onto our vision of marriage. Paul is going to address the differences between how the genders practice mutual submission, and we can’t ignore that. But, whatever comes next, in verses 22-33 has to be understood and framed by verse 21, “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ”. Marriage then is about spirit-filled mutual submission. It's not an issue of whether or not women should submit to men, it's an issue of both men and women learning to submit to one another in marriage.

The challenge that we have in our culture is that nobody views marriage as the giving up of my own rights for the sake of the other. Rather, marriage in our culture is about getting my needs met. Marriage in our world is not based on self-denial, but self-fulfilment. But Paul is saying, marriage only “works” to the degree that it embodies the pattern of God’s self-giving love in Christ. Mutual fulfilment through mutual sacrifice. Paul concludes chapter 5 with a powerful revelation. The point of marriage is ultimately not to point to each other, it's to point to Jesus. This is the secret—that the gospel of Jesus and marriage explain one another.

1. Reflect upon the kind of acts that you have engaged in this week. Which ones are community building and which ones are community destroying? Is there anything that God is asking you to disentangle yourself from so that you may have greater freedom to walk in love?

Before taking a look at Ephesians chapter four, it is important to note that in chapter three Paul prays that we might “have power, together with all the Lord's people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge”. This is a pinnacle statement in the letter and sets the stage for the next chapter. We are to spend our lives collectively focussing on all dimensions of the love of Christ. The power of God is made available to us to empower us to grasp or comprehend the multi-faceted, boundless love of Christ. In chapter four, where Paul unpacks what it means to live a life worthy of the calling we have received, we see that the love of Christ must be the centre of all we do and all we are. We are called to be completely humble and gentle, patient, and bear with one another in love. We are called to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” If we are called, then we are also empowered to do so. Paul’s statement that we are to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (v. 3) leads into a discussion regarding doctrinal unity within the church and how it is maintained (v. 4-6): He states that there is “one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” This revelation was given to those with the “proclamation” gifts (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers - the “bringers” of revelation) and was disseminated throughout the body. Paul looked forward to a time when the body would be well equipped with the truth and would rise into maturity, no longer being “infants, tossed back and forth by the waves”, but equipped to speak the truth in love (v. 15). Paul ends this section of Ephesians chapter 4 by returning to centrality of the love of Christ in all things.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. What does it mean for you to focus on the centrality of the love of Christ in your life today?

2. Take some time to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal how he wants to work more of the love of Christ into your life.

3. We are told that the mature body of Christ will “speak the truth in love”, as a response to the “deceitful scheming” of “cunning and crafty” people. Take a moment to reflect on how you have been challenged to bring the Love of Christ into difficult situations. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you insight into how you are uniquely empowered to "speak in love" into difficult situations.

Read: Ephesians 3

In chapter 3, Paul speaks of the mystery that has been hidden for generations. This mystery which was once hidden has now been revealed and we have been initiated into it. Paul writes this letter whilst imprisoned and he describes himself as prisoner of Christ Jesus. He sees himself as a prisoner for the Lord because his imprisonment was proof that God’s marvellous plan was already at work.

This mystery, this marvellous plan was that Jews and Gentiles have now been brought together into complete union through their union with Christ. Jews and Gentiles together are now co-heirs, co-members and co-sharers of all the promises of Christ. This mystery that God has now revelled is beautiful because of how radical it is, how beyond any human design it is. An undivided humanity, a people reconciled to Christ and reconciled to one another.

As Paul continues to unpack the implications of this mystery we read that it is through the church that God makes known His manifold wisdom to the powers that be, spiritual and earthly. Manifold means many coloured, this body that Christ is creating is diverse. A unified church is a diverse church. In a divided and hurt world, a society in which there is not division preaches the manifold wisdom of Christ.

Paul concludes Chapters 1-3 with a prayer. This prayer gives us insight into how Christ will accomplish this marvellous plan that has now been revealed, this new humanity. He prays that through the power of His sprit, believers would be strengthened so that Christ would dwell within their hearts. It is through this power and indwelling that we are able to have our roots go down deep in His love, firmly establishing us in His love. Then together as one family, one body we are able to begin to grasp together how far reaching His love is. This new creation, this unified body is only possible through divine power generating divine love.

In light of of this mystery, this reconciled humanity which is empowered by His spirit and firmly established in His love, Paul prays “now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine."

Thank you for joining us as we continue to dig into our Keeping it Real series on Ephesians.

In Ephesians chapter 2, we start to get a glimpse of the Apostle Paul’s vision for the church

in Ephesus and how Christ’s work of salvation reconciles us to God and to one

another. Paul shows us how the gospel of Christ ministers peace to both pull

down and build up.

First, peace pulls down the dividing walls of hostility between God and one

other. Humans throughout history go about inventing new ways of dividing,

race, politics, class, sex and religion. The gospel says “no more”. We all stand

equally sinful, and we stand equally as recipients of grace if you ask for it.

Second, peace builds up, giving us a new way of building our identity. Rather

than building our identity on our achievements, gifts, or status, we build our

identity on the foundation of Christ, He is our cornerstone.

Here’s what this building up looks like. Firstly, we are fellow citizens. Then he

says, we are members of God's household. Thirdly, he says, we are stones

joined together in God’s temple. Each one gets more intense with regard to our

relationship with God. A king lives in a country with his people, but a father lives

under the same roof with his children and a temple is where God lives. The

images also get more intense regarding our relationships to each other. If you're

co-citizens, you may live kilometres from each other. But if you're are growing

up in the same home, you live just metres from each other. If your stones in a

building, there's no distance at all.

In summary, what Paul is trying to say is that if you want the surpassing power

of the gospel to be at work in and through your life, you have to deeply commit

yourself to His community. As we do, we together are formed into God’s

masterpiece, a gallery of glory declaring the testimony of God’s salvation

available to all.

3. Ask Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of your life where your identity or self-

In Ephesians chapter one Paul reveals, in one sweeping sentence (in the original Greek), the lavish benefits, gifts and privileges bestowed on those who are in Christ. We are blessed, predestined, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, graced, chosen and “marked… with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit”. All this "for the praise of his glory”. Through Christ’s victory over "all rule and authority, power and dominion”, we are free and empowered "to be holy and blameless in his sight”. Paul then determines that he ought to pray for us! He prays that we might receive revelation that gives us a deeper understanding and experience of all that Christ has done on our behalf.

Thank you for joining us as we continue to dig into our Grace Practices series.

Author James K.A. Smith says, “You are what you love, but you may not love

what you think you love”.

Do you have a good grasp of the issues that exist within your heart?

Would you be confident to be granted your heart’s truest desire or unsure what

that would even be?

These are the questions we wrestled with this week and are the questions that

our discipleship with Jesus and spiritual formation must confront.

What do you love?

In Colossians 3, Paul gives us the picture of “putting off, and putting on” helping

us to see that we unlearn our old habits and learn to live according to our new

nature in Christ through practice. Or as Paul says in 1 Timothy 4:8, through

“training”.

Training is different from merely “trying” in that it recognises the resistance we

will face as we learn to live like Jesus in this world and focuses on growth,

leading to joy.

How do we train? Well, firstly it is a work of grace! But, we still have a part to

play. We intentionally live by a set of “grace practices” called a “rule of life” or a

“rhythm of grace”. This rhythm of grace “gives us a way to enter into the life-

long process of personal transformation. Its practices help us to shed the

familiar but constricting “old self” and allow our “new self” in Christ to be

formed” - Marjorie Thompson.

At Dayspring we want our Rhythm of Grace to anchor us in our 3 foundations

of;

Presence - Life With Jesus,

People - Love Like Jesus, and

Purpose - Live As Jesus did.

As we do this, we will find that our Rhythm of Life will keep us anchored to

Christ’s table. We will be positioned to encounter His presence, to be present to

others, and to engage in our divine purpose.

1. On a scale of 1 to 10 how skilled are you at understanding the issues of

your heart?

2. What practices have you intentionally engaged in to guard your heart?

3. Take some time to reflect on your “rhythm of grace”. Are there practices you

need to engage so that you may be more securely anchored to presence,

Hospitality is about us creating a space for others, a space where they can meet Jesus and experience freedom; a place where creativity is birthed and destiny is revealed!

In this message, we'll look at Romans 8:14-19 and how the Spirit frees us from being orphans enslaved to fear, to children led by the Spirit. We will look at the life of David and Saul, and the differences in being led by fear, and being led by the voice of God.

Praise and Worship doesn’t always look like singing a song. We can worship God simply by spending time with Him and doing what we love, with the people that we love, in the places that we love.

On Palm Sunday, we continue our "God's Good News" series in the lead up to easter by looking at how Jesus' triumphal entry speaks prophetically about what salvation looks like, how salvation comes and how we embrace it.

This week we conclude our vision series, "Here We Go", looking at how we are sent into the world to make disciples and bear witness to the kingdom of God. We look at the question of how we share the message and story of Christ in a compelling way that cuts through all the other competing narratives in our world.

Rev. 2:4 reminds us of how essential it is to value and experience an ongoing renewal of love, both as an individual and also as a community.

Ps Aaron kicks off our 21 days of Focus looking at Luke 22 and the Prayer of Relinquishment prayed by Jesus as He faced the cross. St Augustine says "True, whole prayer is nothing but love". The prayer of relinquishment is where God’s grace teaches us to release our will and flow into the will of the Father. It is from this place that our prayers are transformed into acts of love.

Ps Aaron concludes our series on "Seeing Jesus" teaching from Colossians 3 that "you have been raised with Christ". We have been invited into all that Christ has done and all that He is. Based on this truth we don't have to let our enemy cancel our confidence. Instead, let Christ be our confidence and the vision that we live out of in 2021.

As we enter into a new year Ps Aaron, continuing our series "Seeing Jesus" invites us into the promise that a vision of Jesus gives us. So much bigger than the opportunity that a new year brings… Jesus offers us a whole new life !! A new way of being human, relating to one another and to the world around us. Getting a vision of Jesus is giving Him permission to create beauty out of discordant parts of our life.

Russell continues our series "Our Emmanuel" looking at God’s rescue plan for humanity and how at the point of the virgin conception, everything changed, both past, present and future .

Ps Aaron speaks from Ezekiel 36 unpacking what we feel God is up to in this season, moving from our heads and into our hearts, moving from an idea we believe in to a person we have given our whole lives to in order to become like Him in this world.

In closing out our series on "The Way of Jesus" our teaching team come together to answer your questions and recap the last 12 weeks of teaching.

In week 11 of our series "The Way of Jesus", Ps Russell brings a word on how the grace practices help us in learning to listen and discern the will of God in our lives.

In week 10 of our "The Way of Jesus" series Ps Aaron looks at the practice of study. The disciples said to Jesus, "where else would we go, You have the words of life".

The word of God is life giving and life transforming. This week we are looking at the importance of the Word of God in our lives, how we are to approach it, some of the challenges we have when it comes to understanding it and applying it, but also the power that lies within it to bring life and transformation.

Pastors Kristen and Bec dig into week 8 of our series "The Way of Jesus" teaching into the power of fellowship. As we look into how Jesus lived His life we see clearly the importance and the power of doing life in fellowship with others. As with all the "grace practices" this is something we have to be intentional about and Kristen and Bec give us some great keys on how to do just that.

As we understand and align ourselves with God’s covenantal promises, the land (and our cities) will take on the DNA of God's people (Isaiah 62:4-5)

When we keep our ministry within the boundaries of an authentic faith expression, the Spirit provides the amplification.

In 1 Cor 2 Paul asks the leading question "Who counsels God?" The answer is of course "Jesus". Then he says that because of the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have the mind of Christ. This therefore brings us into the realm of knowing the counsel of God. Incredible!

Don't settle for anything less than Jesus' expectation that we would live our lives in ongoing revelation and empowerment.

Ps David kicks off our new series JESUS+nothing. Hebrews is a powerful book about the assurance we have in Jesus. He is superior to all others and has given us access to the “throne of Grace”. We are encouraged to be totally assured about our salvation while at the same time urged to be motivated about our empowerment in Jesus and our invitation to work as He did.

Ps David - Hebrews is rather strong in pointing out that Jesus is altogether superior to all others. He is now the only avenue of revelation, the only High Priest and is the only One we should relate to. The Old Covenant (Mosaic Law) is useless and obsolete. An obsolete and useless law cannot be used to ‘balance’ Grace without neutralising the power of Grace.

Ps David - In 2 Cor 3, Paul is rather blunt about the Law being a ministry of death that causes hearts to be hardened and faces that are veiled so that we cannot see Jesus. He appeals to us to go to the Holy Spirit (the LORD) who will set us free to live in the fresh revelation of who we are in Jesus.

Ps Aaron brings teaches into the area of inheritance and how we unlock it and activate in our lives.

Ps Narelle - Like the woman at the well who had an unexpected encounter, Jesus, is inviting you into an encounter with Him that will release you from past limitations and into His extravagant love. Not a casual, indifferent encounter, but one that will radically and wonderfully bless you (and the people around you) this year and beyond.

God has most definitely pulled out all stops to get us to Heaven. That’s Grace. Heaven’s environment is one of exquisite joy. That’s love! We are invited, urged even, to love well and create Heaven on earth.
